rishikesh travel guide: Places, Cafés and Food

My Rishikesh Travel Experience on August 2026

Rishikesh is one of those places where you can plan an entire trip around adventure or simply explore at your own pace. From the Ganga and famous bridges to riverside cafés and local food there is plenty to discover.

I travelled to Rishikesh on August 17 and wanted to explore more than just the usual tourist spots. The town is known for its spiritual atmosphere but there is another side to it too. You will find adventure activities and cafés alongside temples and traditional eateries.

If you are planning a Rishikesh trip this guide will help you explore some popular places and discover a few things worth trying along the way.

Rishikesh travel places

You cannot really talk about Rishikesh without mentioning the Ganga. The river is a major part of the town and draws people looking for everything from spiritual experiences to adventure.

Ram Jhula and Lakshman Jhula are among the best known landmarks. The surrounding areas have cafés and small shops where you can stop while exploring.

Triveni Ghat is another popular place to visit. Many people come here for the evening Ganga Aarti. If you want to experience the spiritual side of Rishikesh then Parmarth Niketan is also worth considering.

My suggestion is to avoid rushing through every attraction in one day. Choose the places that interest you most and leave some time to explore the streets along the way.

River rafting in rishikesh and Adventure Activities

For many travellers river rafting is one of the main reasons to visit Rishikesh. It is one of the best known adventure activities in the area and there are different rafting stretches depending on the season and river conditions.

You can also look into bungee jumping and other adventure activities offered by established operators.

However August falls during the monsoon season. Heavy rain and high water levels can affect rafting availability. Always check current conditions and official guidance before booking an activity.

Choose a reputable operator that provides proper safety equipment and clear instructions. Adventure is fun but safety should always come first.

Exploring the Café in Rishikesh

Rishikesh has developed a popular café culture especially around areas frequented by travellers. Whether you enjoy a relaxed atmosphere or simply want a break between sightseeing stops there are plenty of places to explore.

During my trip I visited Royal Cafe. I have not included a specific dish because I do not want to recommend food I cannot honestly say I tried.

If you enjoy discovering cafés take a look at the menu and prices before ordering. A popular place is not necessarily the best option for everyone.

I would also suggest exploring local eateries instead of spending your entire food budget at cafés. Sometimes the most interesting part of travelling is discovering something different from what you usually eat at home.

Local Food Worth Exploring

If you want to go beyond the usual café menu then look for traditional Uttarakhand food while visiting Rishikesh.

Gahat ki dal is made using horse gram and is associated with the regional cuisine of Uttarakhand.

Phaanu is another traditional lentil based dish worth looking for at eateries that specialise in regional food.

You can also explore local snacks and sweets from neighbourhood shops. Ask locals which places serve freshly prepared food and check what is available that day.

These are suggestions for your trip rather than dishes I personally tried during my visit. Availability can vary from one restaurant to another.

Where I Stayed in Rishikesh

I stayed at MadhvM By the Ganges during my trip.

If you are planning your own visit it is worth comparing accommodation options based on your budget and the places you want to explore. Check recent guest reviews and confirm the exact location before booking.

Do not assume that every property near the Ganges offers direct river access or a river view. Confirm those details with the hotel if they matter to you.

Things to Know Before Visiting Rishikesh

A little planning can make your Rishikesh travel experience easier.

  • Check the weather: August is part of the monsoon season so rain may affect your plans.
  • Confirm rafting availability: River conditions can change quickly during the monsoon.
  • Wear comfortable footwear: You will appreciate it while exploring on foot.
  • Check café prices: Look at the menu before ordering to avoid surprises.
  • Keep your plans flexible: Weather conditions may require you to change your itinerary.

Is Rishikesh Worth Visiting?

Rishikesh is worth considering if you want a destination that combines nature and spirituality with food and adventure. You can visit famous landmarks and explore cafés or look for regional dishes that you may not find at home.

The experience can be different depending on when you visit. During the monsoon you need to pay extra attention to the weather and the availability of outdoor activities.

My advice is simple. Do not plan every minute of your trip. Explore the places that interest you and leave some room for unexpected discoveries.

Sometimes those small discoveries become the most interesting part of travelling.
